Fall is Underway

Visiting friends and family these days is challenging for everyone, but it's especially weird for us nomads. How do you make and develop new friends starting from zero, in an unknown town during a pandemic that requires social distancing?? Fortunately for us, Rockland has many nice people and we've befriended a handful this summer. Hanging out, of course, isn't so easy. We didn't have any connections here in Rockland. We are so busy and are enjoying our twosome bubble so much that we don't feel too isolated, but we do miss getting to spend in-person time with people we know. Luckily for us, we do have friends who are well set up to travel in these strange times! Our pals Beth and Mike have a lovely (and lovingly restored) vintage camper/trailer, and while passing through New England, they drove it to a campground near us for a long weekend visit. It was a treat to spend time with such great friends. Of course, the weather threw us an untimely curve. We hadn't had to wear any rain gear the whole drought-ridden summer, but we had to wear it much of the time they were here, even during a chilly socially distant dinner or two. Despite the damp chill, we still had a nice time; seeing close friends in this day and age was a special treat. Here's a photo of us with Mike (photo taken by Beth) at the nearby Owl's Head lighthouse. I did an artistic rendering of seeing them. We spent our first night with them at their campground watching the harvest moon rise over the ocean and then glimpsing the International Space Station as it passed directly overhead!

It's fall here and it's getting chillier so we're trying find out what we need to do to prepare for Maine winter without a car. Yesterday we shopped for winter boots and today I bought some ice cleats. We'd never have anticipated having to buy things like that, especially as we were envisioning spending winters in the Southern Hemisphere. But so it goes. Thankfully it's still lovely here. There are a few photos of the fall scenery below. One thing that has surprised us is the lovely red color of blueberry barrens in the fall (as shown in the first photo below).
