Illustrated Guide to Obscure Maine Laws

There are certain things that are notable to an outsider after being in a new place for a while. Compiled below are some of the Maine 'laws' that we've noticed (so far).

First, the State must distribute sweatshirts, usually in gray with the word Maine on them, to all residents. This sweatshirt is formalwear but it's ok to wear it to dress down, too.

Maine yards must be as large as a football field and they must have only grass on them. The yards should only be used for mowing! You can file for a permit to have a vegetable garden but it should be as small as possible.

Because of the vast size of Maine lawns, the driving test is completed on a riding mower.

Finally, Maine personal income tax rates are based on how many words a residents says, hence the terse New Englander stereotype.  But there's a tax loophole if your words are used mostly about longing for winter (i.e., "fah win'ah") during the brutal 75 degree Maine summers. We hear people wishing fah win'ah almost any time we overhear a conversation among locals.
