From Melbourne to Adelaide (and koalas!)

We took the Overland train from Melbourne to Adelaide. It took over 9 hours (made it in well ahead of schedule even) and travelled through hundreds of miles of golden Aussie grain fields.  The train is comfortable, cheap as 😉, and the train conductor mentions quirky, unvarnished details about the towns you pass through (e.g., 'that's where the lunatic asylum was,' 'we're now entering Geelong; don't be fooled by the unattractive industrial views as it's really quite an attractive town'). We arrived in Adelaide last night and we just got to see some koalas that the host at our rental place took us to.  Apparently the star of the photos below is a youngster and was sleeping much lower in the tree than adults do (and indeed his parent was at least twice as high in the next tree).

Aussie slang phrases of the day:

  • courtesy of our pals Emma and Andrew's son, Ted: Stop carrying on like a pork chop!
  • And one from Emma--don't be a flaming galah!
